MultiPhy Enables Advanced100G Solution for the Growing Metro Transport Market
1DWDM applications and Point-to-Point applications poised for growth
MultiPhy, Ltd, a global leader in DSP-based high bandwidth CMOS communications semiconductors, today announced the MP1100Q device, enabling the next generation of 100G metro transport applications.
With the growing demand for mobile 4G services, high-speed data services, video streaming, and new high bandwidth applications, a need exists to grow the capacity of the transport dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks and inter-datacenter networks. This together with the content delivery network (CDN) evolution requires a significant growth in network capacity specifically in the metro zones. While long haul 100G transport solutions have been brought to market recently, the solution space focused on metro applications for 100G transport has been underserved.
“We see a distinct 100G metro transport market, apart and separate from the long haul market,” said Daryl Inniss, Vice President and Practice Leader, Communications Components, Ovum. “Driven by metro-focused services like Content Delivery Networks (CDN), cloud computing, and next generation datacenter connectivity, we predict strong growth in the metro transport market.”
MultiPhy is introducing a 100G metro-focused semiconductor device, the MP1100Q, which is targeted to enable 100G optical modules for the metro market. The device supports a 4X28G direct detect technology and leverages an advanced DSP-based receiver technology using Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) algorithms, significantly improving overall performance by overcoming fiber impairments. In addition, the MP1100Q lowers the total cost of the metro module by utilizing mature 10G electro-optic subcomponents.
“We’re seeing an incredibly strong demand for 100G from our customers in the metro,” said Christoph Glingener, Chief Technology Officer at ADVA Optical Networking. “What’s clear is that the needs of service providers and enterprises in this space are significantly different to the long haul. They need a 100G solution that is not optimized for distance, but rather optimized for efficiency, specifically in cost, space, power and spectral. Direct Detection meets these needs.”
The MP1100Q device allows for a low-cost and low-power Compact Form-factor Pluggable (CFP) module solution that easily fits into the existing networks and can provide a path for quick growth. Metro DWDM chassis are poised to take advantage of the power and cost benefits brought to the metro 100G transport space by the MultiPhy MP1100Q device.
MultiPhy will demonstrate the MP1100Q device at the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC), September 19-21 in Geneva, Switzerland in booth 1468.
