Red Bend Software’s (News - Alert) vRapid Mobile has been selected by the Lenovo Group for enabling firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates on its latest range of LePhone Android (News - Alert)-based smartphones.

LePhone will be Lenovo’s first smartphone built especially for pushing information and services like e-mail, news, music, and video to mobile consumers.

It will be sold solely by China Unicom (News - Alert), which is one of the country’s largest mobile service providers.

Red Bend’s vRapid Mobile is deployed in 750 million mobile devices around the world. The standards-based software product allows manufacturers and operators to create compact firmware updates for mobile phones and other wireless devices and for installing these updates over the air quickly.

vRapid Mobile is the sole FOTA solution which can perform firmware updates in the background, without interrupting the users when they are using their phones to talk, text, search the Internet, etc.

Danny Wang, the country manager of Greater China for Red Bend Software, said, "Red Bend is excited that vRapid Mobile is powering software updates in Lenovo’s (News - Alert) first smartphone. .. Lenovo is the world’s fastest growing PC maker, with year-over-year sales up nearly 60 percent in the first quarter of 2010. That same commitment to excellence will, I believe, help the company achieve similar success in the highly competitive smartphone market. 3G networks are growing rapidly in China because consumers are demanding more functionality and features from their mobile phones. A complex, high-performance device such as LePhone requires the comprehensive software management capabilities of Red Bend’s vRapid Mobile."
